It is recommended to give a local analgesic to any animal that is being dehorned. Restrain the animal and use a halter and lead-rope to steady the calf’s head. Clip the hair around the base of the horn. Allow the dehorner to heat up completely.
Use the correct sized tip so it makes a 1/4-inch ring around the horn. Place the dehorner over the horn and apply even pressure. Let the dehorner sit, 10 to 15 seconds. When the dehorner is removed, there should be an even, copper-colored circle around the horn. If the circle is not there, replace the dehorner for another 10 seconds. The horn bud can be scooped out or allowed to slough off.
